A beautiful kitchen

Soapstone countertops without mineral oil.

You wouldn't chop vegetables on the hood of your car and that goes for a soapstone counter as well. As a matter of fact you'll mark any counter, so use a cutting board.

But let's face it, accidents happen especially in an active kitchen. So when stuff happens soapstone lets you fix the problem with relative ease.

Sand the area with a 150 grit sandpaper the same way you would sand a piece of pine.

Wipe the area clean with a wet rag and allow it to dry.

Once dry, use a rag and wipe the entire area with mineral oil.           (More about mineral oil below) If the scratch is small try wiping it with the mineral oil first, that may do the trick.

You're done!

The mineral oil can be purchased at any pharmacy. A 250 ml (10 once) bottle costs about $5.00 and lasts a long time. When your counter is newly installed, it will receive its first coat. Thereafter, we recommend wiping the counters twice a week for the first six weeks and then once every two weeks. To oil an entire kitchen will take about 15 minutes. Mineral oil is perfectly safe - its actually used as a laxative.

You can clean your counters any way you choose - the stone is non-porous.

Special note:

This is from a customer of ours a few years back.

If you would like to decrease or eliminate the frequency of oiling your countertops, try one coat of 100% pure tung oil.  Both oils are compatible.

  1. It needs to be 100% pure tung oil.
  2. Only apply one possibly two coats at different intervals, throughout the life of your stone or it will build up and yellow.
  3. Don't touch any other surface.
